Vouliagmeni Lake is a small brackish-water lake fed by underground currents seeping through the mass of Mount Hymettus located to the south of Vouliagmeni, Greece. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s turquoise waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience.
The healing properties of the natural springs which supply the Vouliagmeni Lake are the result of the water’s high concentration in salts and minerals. All this, in combination with the high water temperatures(22 to 29 degrees Celsius throughout the year), help relieve afflictions of the musculoskeletal system, promote post-traumatic rehabilitation, and help with gynecological, and dermatological diseases. Also, the lake is full of tiny fish (Garra rufa) that nibble your skin when you enter the water!
Furthermore, Vouliagmeni lake is also a mysterious place because popular urban mythology said that some American scuba divers from the US Airbase nearby, disappeared while exploring the undersea caves that fed the lake in the late sixties. Then a couple of years ago their bodies were discovered, more than 35 years later!
There is an entrance fee but then you have access to sunbeds, showers, toilet facilities and of course the lake itself. It is a very worthwhile experience and a beautiful place!
